RATIONALE
To provide quality public health education and training, research, and service delivery that embodies the aspirations of the Kenyan people and global community through the creation, preservation, integration, transmission, and utilization of public health knowledge.
OBJECTIVES
Overall objective:
To facilitate the strengthening of public health training, research capacity, and provision of services to the local and international communities.
Specific objectives:
- Promote training of trans-disciplinary experts capable of meeting the emerging challenges in the field of public health in developing countries as well as promotion of health.
- Facilitate cross-disciplinary research by experts from diverse backgrounds, thus creating an environment that appreciates strength and unity in diversity.
- Provide multidisciplinary services and consultancies to communities at local and international levels
- Be the public health institution of choice for training and research to undergraduate, graduate health care providers and public health experts
- Provide the forum for interrogating important current and emerging issues on national, regional and international public health
Structure
COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION
- The Master of Public Health programme shall run for a minimum period of 2 years or 4 semesters of 15 weeks each and a maximum of 4 years or 8 semesters of 15 weeks each;
- A student who does not complete the Programme within the minimum period of two years shall pay an additional fee of KES. 10,000.00 per Semester for an extension of registration in the MPH program
- The Programme shall consist of coursework, examination, and research leading to a dissertation;
- A course shall be defined as a total of 45 contact hours of lectures, tutorials, practicals, or projects;
- Candidates shall be required to take all prescribed courses in years I and II offered during the training programme.

MODE OF DELIVERY
The mode of learning for the Master's programme is full-time 9:00am to 4:00pm on Weekdays.
The blended learning mode of delivery will be through e-learning that combines face-to-face and online learning approaches. The programme shall be delivered through face-to-face lectures, group work, reading assignments, seminars, class discussions and fieldwork.
Face-to-Face Mode
Lectures, seminars, discussions, tutorials, guided practical experiments and demonstrations. clinical work, clinical teachings & tutorials, practical demonstrations, teachings in skills laboratory, on-call duties, clinical case discussions, journal clubs, case reports, seminars, multimedia resources. Most of the learning will be participatory.
Open, Distance and E-Learning Mode
Home and/or office-based media using a variety of self-instructional electronic and online self-study materials, such as; written self-instructional study modules, online interactive devices and self-tests, cloud-based content, videos of lectures mediated technical learning materials e.g. audiovisual and e- learning materials
Blended Learning Mode
A combination of face-to-face and online learning approaches.
Admission Requirements
The common regulations for the Master's Degree in all faculties of the University of Nairobi shall apply. Holders of any of the following degrees shall be eligible for admission into the programme.
1. Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB), Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS), Bachelor of Nursing Sciences (BScN), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.), Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM) of the University of Nairobi or a degree from any other institution recognised by the University of Nairobi Senate and at least one year of post-registration experience in a medical or other health-related field.
2. Holders of a first degree from the University of Nairobi in a discipline closely related to public health and medicine including an upper second class honours degree in environmental health, sociology, nutrition, demography, statistics, economics, planning, administration and anthropology, education and communication, who in addition have relevant and adequate practical experience of not less than two years.
3. Holders of Bachelor of Science degree of lower second class in the discipline mentioned in 1 or 2 with relevant Post Graduate Diploma or three years relevant experience.
4. Holders of equivalent qualifications to those in 1, 2 or 3 recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.

Careers
The programme started in 1984 and since then more than 250 graduates have been trained. This is a two-year programme leading to an award of the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree.
The programme aims to produce specialists who will provide leadership in community health at all levels. The emphasis is re-orientation from hospital clinical practice to community health practice, with special emphasis on the community. The graduate from this programme is expected to have acquired competence in the following areas:
- Control of diseases and management of health problems;
- Health services management;
- Evaluation of health services;
- Planning and execution of educational programmes for health;
- Health services research including research at the community level.
Prospects
Our graduands get to work in private sector, public sector, or academia.
Attachment Opportunities
These include: assisting with Community Diagnosis at Sub-County Hospitals in Kiambu County i.e. Ndeiya, Lusigetti, Gikambura, Wangige, Kihara and Nyathuna; KEMRI/Welcome Trust, Projects managed by Faculty.

Exam Regulations
Written Examination
The common regulations for the Master’s Degree in all the Faculties of the University of Nairobi shall apply;
- A candidate enrolled for the degree shall be required to take examinations and pass in all courses before being allowed to proceed to the second year of study;
- If a candidate fails 50% or more of the units in examinations per year, they will be discontinued from the Programme. Each course will be examined by 1 x 3 hour written examination paper at the end of the semester;
- The final examination shall account for 70% of the final marks in each taught course, while Continuous Assessment (written assignment and practical) shall account for 30% of the marks;
- The pass mark for each course shall be 50%. A candidate who fails to obtain a pass mark in any course, shall on the recommendation of the Faculty Examiners Committee and approval by the Senate, be allowed to sit a supplementary exam in the failed courses at the end of the academic year;
- A candidate who fails the supplementary exam will be allowed to repeat the failed unit(s) in the next academic year;
- A candidate who fails the exam after repeating the course unit(s) shall be recommended to the Faculty Examiners Committee and approval by the Senate for discontinuation from the programme;
- The pass mark obtained after a supplementary examination shall be recorded as 50%, even when a higher score is obtained;
- A candidate who fails a supplementary examination or fails to complete the Programme within the prescribed period shall, on the recommendation of the Faculty Examiners Committee and approval of the Senate, be discontinued.
Dissertation Assessment
The common University of Nairobi regulations of examination of dissertation in all Faculties shall apply;
- The dissertation shall be examined out of 100% and marks distributed as 50% for the written examination; 20% for oral dissertation defence and 30% for the two graded seminar presentations of the research;
- The pass mark for the dissertation shall be 50%;
- A candidate must present the research in at least two seminars to be allowed to submit the dissertation for examination;
- A candidate who fails to obtain a pass mark in the dissertation, shall on the recommendation of the Faculty Examiners Committee and approval by the Senate be allowed to re-submit the dissertation within a period of six months to one year up to a maximum of two times;
- The pass mark obtained by re-submission of the dissertation shall be recorded as 50%.
- A candidate who fails in a second re-submission of the dissertation, shall on the recommendation of the Faculty Examiners Committee and approval by the Senate, be discontinued from the programme.
