RATIONALE

To provide quality public health education and training ,research and service delivery that embodies the aspirations of the Kenyan people and global community through the creation, preservation,integration,transmission,utilization of public health knowledge.

OBJECTIVES

1. Demonstrate theoretical and practical statistical knowledge.

2. Apply techniques of mathematics,statistics and computing to health research.

3. Provide statistical expertise on public health issues.

4. Analyse and interpret medical data.

5. Develop research designs and engage in health research.

The Department of Public and Global Health offers a PhD in Public Health by research/thesis as a three-year programme, with a rolling admission/ongoing enrollment throughout the year.

Mode of Delivery

Proposal, progress report and thesis defense is done virtually and could also be presented face-to-face.

During the study period, a candidate participates in seminars, journal clubs and study fellowships.

PhD students, under the supervision of an academic staff and or an expert as a supervisor, carry out a research thesis project on a selected topic in Medical Statistics. Research proposals shall be presented to the Departmental Postgraduate Committee, Faculty Postgraduate Committee and appropriate ethics committees as may be required by the Faculty.

The common regulations for Doctor of Philosophy Degree in all faculties of the University of Nairobi apply. Holders of any of the following degrees are eligible for admission into the programme:

a) Holder of a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Nairobi; or

b) Holder of a Bachelor's and Master's degree or equivalent academic qualifications recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate as of comparable status;

c) Able to produce evidence to the satisfaction of Senate of his/her adequate background in the discipline and capacity to carry out research;

d) May be required to undergo an interview by the Department to determine suitability for registration;

e) A draft proposal of at least 15 pages submitted through online application system.

The programme aims at producing specialists who will be able to provide leadership in community health at all levels. The emphasis is re-orientation from hospital clinical practice to community health practice, with special emphasis on the community. Graduates from this programme are expected to have acquired competence in the following;

- Academic health research, training and mentorship.

- Policy analysis and health services management.

- Evaluation of health projects and programmes.

- Provide strategic advisory services in health.

- Peer review and publication.

 

Prospects

Our graduands get to serve in the private sector, public sector and/or academia.

Exam Regulations

Candidate shall conduct research in the selected thematic area of Public Health as approved by the Unit and Faculty. The thesis shall be submitted three months before the anticipated date of defense.
