On October 6-7, 2025, the Department of Public and Global Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Nairobi (UoN) had a meeting with faculty members from the Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) to explore opportunities for collaboration between the two institutions.
On October 6-7, 2025, the Department of Public and Global Health, Faculty of Health Sciences,
University of Nairobi (UoN) had a meeting with faculty members from the Institute of Public Health,
University of Southern Denmark (SDU) with the aim of exploring opportunities for collaboration between
the two institutions. The central objective of the meeting was to identify areas of complementarity that
could form the basis of a partnership to promote international cooperation and enrich both scientific and
academic fields for the two institutions. The delegation from Denmark was led by Prof. Leena Eklund
Karlsson, Associate Professor and Docent, while the Kenyan team was headed by Dr. Rose Opiyo,
Chair of the Department of Public and Global Health. Other members present in the meeting from the
University of Nairobi were Dr. Marshal Mweu, Dr. Peter Njoroge, Dr. Jane Muita, and Mr. Kenneth
Odongo Owuori. From SDU team, other members present were Mr. Nils Roger Karlsson, a gender
science specialist, and two SDU Master of Public Health (MPH) students currently undertaking
internships in Kenya—Miss Nawal Abdullahi Jama Hassan and Miss Hawa Abdirashid Farah.
The SDU Institute of Public Health has multidisciplinary academic programmes and broad research
focus. The University of Nairobi, Department of Public and Global Health too has multidisciplinary
community and Public Health programs that almost mirror what SDU offers. It was noted that both
universities have a strong track record in Public Health research and training and contribute
significantly across a wide range of academic and scientific disciplines, with several key areas of
potential collaboration. These include joint research initiatives through grant applications and resource
mobilization, shared teaching and examination activities including short courses, mentorship, staff and
student exchanges, as well as student internships and attachments. The meeting concluded with a
shared commitment to building a strong, mutually beneficial academic partnership between the two
